Longstanding Northeast Iowa Conference in jeopardy of dissolving

One of the area’s oldest conferences could be dissolving.

The Upper Iowa Conference has extended invitations to three members of the Northeast Iowa Conference: New Hampton, Crestwood and Waukon.

Waverly-Shell Rock, Charles City and Decorah of the Northeast Iowa Conference were not given invitations to the UIC.

Oelwein left the NEIC for the North Iowa Cedar League beginning this school year, leaving the NEIC with only six teams.

According to its bylaws, if the Northeast Iowa Conference is left with five teams or fewer, it won’t be viable.

The Upper Iowa Conference has also extended invites to Sumner-Fredericksburg and Oelwein of the NICL, Osage from the Top of Iowa Conference and Riceville from the Iowa Star Conference.

Waverly-Shell Rock athletic director Greg Bodensteiner on the NEIC’s current situation.

Bodensteiner says it’s unsurprising to see what’s taking place with the NEIC.

Bodensteiner says W-SR will simply have to wait and see what other schools decide.

Bodensteiner says conference realignment is a complicated issue.
