Iowa State, Iowa & UNI ready for day 2 of NCAA Wrestling Championships, listen for updates on The Fan

Day one of the NCAA Wrestling Championships took place yesterday in Detroit.

Defending champion Iowa pushed six wrestlers into today’s quarterfinals and are in 5th place in the team standings with 20 1/2 points. Four other Hawkeyes remain alive in consolation competition.

Penn State was in first after the first day. The Nittany Lions have six quarterfinalists and 27 1/2 points.

UNI is in 6th place with 15 points. The Panthers lone wrestler in the the quarterfinals is Parker Keckeisen at 184 pounds. Northern Iowa has five wrestlers competing in the consolation rounds.

It was a tough first day for Iowa State. Yesterday in one of the day’s biggest upsets, David Carr, the defending national champion at 157, had his 55-match winning streak snapped as he lost in overtime to 17th-seeded Hunter Willits of Oregon State.

ISU has no wrestlers in the quarterfinals but does have four Cyclones wrestling in the consolation second round this morning.
