Waverly-Shell Rock being asked to leave Northeast Iowa Conference

Waverly-Shell Rock is being asked by a group of schools led by New Hampton to leave the century-old Northeast Iowa Conference.

The Upper Iowa Conference has recently invited New Hampton, Crestwood and Waukon to leave the Northeast Iowa Conference and if one of those schools leaves the conference would be left with just five schools and according to its bylaws would not be able to continue.

The strategy behind asking Waverly-Shell Rock to leave is that another smaller school might be more likely to join the NEIC and keep it solvent.

Waverly-Shell Rock’s current 9th-12th grade enrollment is 596 students, which is the largest in the conference. New Hampton is at 272 and is the smallest.
