Lang to be Sentenced June 27

The man convicted last week of first degree murder for killing Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith during an April 2021 standoff is set to be sentenced on June 27. Michael Lang will be sentenced in Grundy County at 1:30 p.m. and faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for the first degree murder charge. Lang was also found guilty by a Hamilton County jury of attempt to commit murder, and assault on a peace officer in the pursuit, altercation, and standoff in Grundy Center.  Victim impact statements will be expected at the sentencing hearing.
