Dr. Jared Smith
Today’s guest is someone who holds a very special place in my heart—not only because he’s one of the most respected educational leaders in the country, but because he’s also my eldest son, Dr. Jared Smith!
Jared is entering his fifth year as Superintendent of the Waterloo Community School District, serving more than 10,000 students and approximately 1,700 staff members.
Jared was named one of the Top 10 School District Superintendents in the United States by Education Insider Magazine in 2026, and under his leadership, Waterloo Schools earned recognition as Forbes Number #1 School District Employer in Iowa and Iowa’s top urban school district. Also, Forbes’ #7 Best Overall Employer in Iowa in 2025. Those honors reflect real results, including improved student achievement, stronger teacher retention, and fewer behavior referrals.
Jared has also helped lead one of the most historic projects in Waterloo’s educational history—the new Waterloo High School, which will unite East and West High Schools under one roof and open in 2028.
In addition to his work as superintendent, Jared is an author, speaker, adjunct professor, executive coach, and award-winning blogger. When he’s not leading schools, you’ll find him reading, writing, working out, attending concerts, and cheering on his favorite sports teams.
