Latonjyaline “Tonnie” Rector
Some people are born with music in their hearts… and for today’s guest, that music began almost from the moment she entered the world!
Born on Halloween—more than two months ahead of schedule—Latonjyaline “Tonnie” Rector has been surprising people ever since. After her parents tragically lost her twin brother during pregnancy, her mother didn’t even know she was expecting another baby. Today, she lovingly calls Tonnie her “Gem.”
Growing up in Traer before moving to Waterloo, Tonnie’s love of performing began in third grade at the North Tama Talent Show. She and her sister Alexis quickly became local favorites, performing at the Cattle Congress, the Traer Winding Stairs Festival, Clutier Days, the Traer Museum, nursing homes, and even talent competitions in Des Moines.
After moving to Waterloo, Tonnie attended Hoover Middle School, West Middle School, Bunger Middle School, and graduated from West High School in 2004, where she even had the opportunity to perform in front of the entire student body.
Along the way, she was chosen to perform with the North Tama High School Show Choir while still in fifth grade, appeared on KWWL’s “Make Me a Star,” competed in the Bill Riley Talent Search, won a church talent competition that earned her a $1,200 college scholarship, auditioned for American Idol in Nashville, and caught the attention of music industry professionals. Although financial obstacles prevented several recording opportunities, she never let go of her dream.
In fact, that dream is still very much alive. Recently, Tonnie competed in the Corridor Talent Search and finished second among the Top 10 contestants, proving that her passion, talent, and determination continue to shine.
Today, she’s a devoted mother of four, a paraeducator, cheer coach for the Roaring Tigers, and has spent nearly four years supporting individuals with disabilities through Cedar Valley Support Community Services. She also enjoys performing karaoke, singing alongside her 9-year-old daughter at talent shows, and continues pursuing her lifelong dream of singing with a country band.
Her story reminds us that dreams don’t have expiration dates—they simply keep getting stronger every time we step back onto the stage.
