Waterloo Man Injured After Fiery Wrong Way Crash

A 26-year old Waterloo man has been air-lifted to an Iowa City hospital with critical injuries after a fiery wrong-way crash along U.S. Highway 218 near the curve after the Broadway Street overpass early Friday morning. The Iowa State Patrol says the crash occurred around 2:15 AM when Jordan Welch was driving southbound in the northbound lanes towards Waterloo when he collided head-on with a semi truck. After crashing with the semi, Welch’s car caught on fire. The semi crashed through the concrete median into the southbound lanes. A passerby was able to get Welch out of the vehicle; he is said to be in critical condition, though the driver of the semi truck was uninjured.  Law enforcement redirected both lanes of Highway 218 northbound and southbound until about 8:00 Friday morning.
