Groundbreaking For Waterloo Fiber

A project to create a new broadband internet utility for the city of Waterloo will be getting underway. City leaders held a groundbreaking Wednesday afternoon at Prairie Grove Park, but actual construction work should begin soon. The new broadband communications system has been in the works for many years. In 2005, the voters of Waterloo supported the formation of a municipal telecom. Last September, 84% of residents in Waterloo voted for a $20 million general obligation bond to build the network. New Waterloo Fiber General Manager Eric Lage says they’re ready to get started.

Lage says the cost for the new internet utility should be very affordable for customers.

Lage says the project is a lengthy one.

The construction should be fully completed by 2026.
