The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office joined the Iowa State Patrol and other members of law enforcement Monday morning in a bridge dedication ceremony for fallen state trooper Sergeant Jim Smith. Sergeant Smith was killed in the line of duty in April 2021, after he was shot by a suspect during a standoff at his home in Grundy Center. The bridge dedicated to his memory is the US Hwy 20 bridge over the Wapsipinicon River near mile marker 255, just east of Independence.
